Program note:
A black hole is a region in spacetime where the gravitational pull is so powerful that nothing, not even light, can escape. While the black hole may appear as nothing, one could say that it is everything—an incomprehensibly great amount of matter, condensed into a region the size of an average metropolis on Earth.
In 'Void', the audience embarks on a voyage toward a black hole, where they are slowly engulfed by its intimidating presence, manipulated across spacetime until they pass the point of no return, known as the 'event horizon', to be completely devoured—erased from existence. Using the forces of an orchestra, I capture the impression of a black hole, with all its tendencies. Its constant rotation is depicted through the strings section fluctuating the angle of their bow and the circular motion of the cymbal. The movement of surrounding light particles is captured primarily by the scattered, unorganized movement in the winds section. The immense gravitational pull is portrayed by the sheer brute force of each instrument.
Consider this work as a meditation on a monumental phenomenon, such as that of nature so terrifying yet mesmerizing; stranger than fantasies long lost in time. It is a tribute to discoveries that stand for human ingenuity, progress, and perseverance.
