Program note:
The inspiration behind 'On the Prairie Where it Slithers' is the sound world of the serpent. The string quartet embodies a snake as it slithers through the tall grass, waiting for an opportunity to attack its prey. The snake's movement is represented by the constant motion of sixteenth notes, with erratic gestures emerging whenever it strikes. The sibilance produced by playing near the bridge resembles the snake's hisses. Throughout the piece, melodic fragments are developed and interwoven into the gestural ideas. Together, the ensemble must function as a single organism.
